Case study
A competitive memory-matching game featuring practice, ranked progression, real-time multiplayer, and a configurable game experience.

MindFlash is a browser-based memory-match game designed to make a familiar brain-training mechanic more engaging through game-like progression and competitive play. Players can practice at their own pace, challenge themselves in ranked mode, or compete with friends and other players through real-time multiplayer matches. Behind the gameplay, a dedicated admin panel manages game modes, difficulty settings, and playable levels through a data-driven catalog, making the experience easier to configure and extend.
A game built around hardcoded modes, difficulty levels, and gameplay rules becomes difficult to maintain and expand. Even small configuration changes can require code modifications across the frontend and backend. Multiplayer also needs more than matching two players: it requires coordinated matchmaking, invitations, synchronized setup, and reliable transitions into a match.
The project combines a streamlined player experience with a modular backend architecture. On the frontend, the play setup brings game modes, level selection, and multiplayer entry points into one unified screen, with a difficulty slider and an explicit Play action. For direct friend matches, a synchronized pre-match lobby lets the host choose the level while the guest follows the selection in real time. On the backend, a game-engine registry separates gameplay mechanics from an admin-managed catalog of games, modes, difficulties, and levels.
One of the main engineering challenges was removing duplicated game configuration from the client and server without breaking existing gameplay and multiplayer flows. The solution introduces a centralized game catalog backed by MongoDB and an in-memory cache, with admin CRUD operations for configuration. Another challenge was coordinating multiplayer state: direct matches now use a shared lobby where level changes are synchronized between players, while Quick Match retains its immediate matchmaking flow.
MindFlash has evolved beyond a basic memory game into a modular gaming application with separate player and admin interfaces. The implemented architecture centralizes game configuration, simplifies the play setup, and supports real-time multiplayer lobbies, friend invitations, and matchmaking. Further work includes generalizing daily-challenge progress across configurable modes and validating the engine architecture with a second game mechanic.
